Aguadilla day trip

Experience "the eye of the water"

Located northeast of Rincon, the town of Aguadilla is a popular day trip destination for many tourists. Nestled in the Western Costal Valley, Aguadilla borders the Atlantic Ocean. Its terrain is mainly flat, with the highest elevation at Jimenez Peak. The scenic Culebrinas River is its largest isolated body of water. Once the site of the Ramey Air Force Base, Aguadilla's former military airport is now home to the modern-day Rafael Hernandez Airport. The town's economy is supported primarily by the trading of tobacco, sugar, fruits, coffee, and cotton.

Founded in 1775 by Luis de Córdova, the town of Aguadilla gets its name from the Indian word "Guadiya," which translates to "garden." It's commonly known as "La Villa del Ojo de Agua," or "village of the eye of the water." This fitting nickname captures the essence of a town known for its scenic, surf-friendly beaches. Aguadilla offers several prime surfing spots, the most popular of which are Wilderness, Gas Chambers, and Crash Boat, once home to a navy fueling pier.

There are several reputable tour groups in the area:

  • Located on Crash Boast Beach, West Paradise takes tourists on kayak, fishing, and snorkeling charter tours (787 692 5538)
  • Excursiones Guarinquen takes day-trippers on a wide array of activities in Aguadilla, including bird watching, coffee plantation tours, kayaking, biking, and backpacking (787-888-2887)
  • Based in Aguadilla, Aquatica Dive and Bike Adventures explores the western and northern regions of Puerto Rico (787-890-6071)

In addition to ample water sport opportunities, Aguadilla offers visitors a wide range of family-friendly activities and attractions:

  • Take in the breathtaking views of the nearby Isla Desecheo, a remote tropical island that's designated as a National Wildlife Refuge
  • Plaza de Recreo, the hub of the town, offers visitors a dose of cultural flair
  • Built in 1889, the Punta Borinquen Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Horseback trail rides take tourists on explorations of the town's beaches and tropical forests
